Technical SEO

Technical SEO

In this Technical SEO guide, I will be going over some fundamental Technical SEO concepts and how to use them properly. Technical SEO is often referred to as “on-page SEO” by most people, but I like to consider it a separate entity. Technical SEO usually stops Google from crawling and indexing your website – if you get the Technical side of things wrong, Google won’t find your site. Technical SEO is a very broad topic, and it can get quite complicated at times, but I will try my best to keep this Technical SEO guide as simple to understand as possible.

First off, Technical SEO should always be done manually (if possible). Technical SEO is not like content SEO or link-building SEO, where you can automate many tasks. Technical SEO often requires doing things by hand and needs to be done with care. Technical SEO

What is SEO?

You’re new to the whole SEO thing. SEO stands for search engine optimization. This term refers to all of the stuff that you can add to your website to get noticed by major search engines like yahoo, bing, and google. The more SEO work you do, the better chance you will be noticed by the search engine, thus bringing you more traffic. No work can be done on pages within your site itself, SEO work that should only be done on certain parts of your website, and SEO work that needs to be done to make sure your keywords are properly placed in tags like meta tags and header tags. In another post, I’ll go over SEO work for your meta tags and SEO work for pages within your site; this SEO tutorial will be on SEO work that should be done on the entire website to make sure all of your SEO bases are covered.

One thing SEO is not, SEO is not spamming. Sending SEO work to your site is no different than sending links or any other type of marketing, and SEO is best done when it seems the least like SEO and the most like you’re just talking about whatever your website’s all about.

SEO stands for search engine optimization. This term refers to all things you can add to your website that will get noticed by search engines like Yahoo, Bing, and Google. The more SEO work you do on your site, the better chance it has to be noticed by search engines, bringing you more traffic. There are SEO tasks you need to do on pages within your site, SEO tasks to make sure your SEO keywords are in SEO tags like meta tags, and SEO tasks that need to be done on the entire website itself. Why do I need to focus on technical SEO?

Technical SEO refers to the technical items you need to take care of when going through your website. It is a very technical aspect of SEO which many do not go into, but it’s important for high search rankings and quality traffic.

When people say technical SEO, they are about fixing any technical issues affecting the site, like broken links, redirects, and technical errors.

Technical SEO helps you create a quality website that does not have technical issues. A website with technical issues will give the user a poor experience, and they will most likely leave your site without looking at any of your content or services.

If someone says they do technical SEO, they usually do technical optimization. Google has announced that it will be pulling back on some of its technical SEO-related updates.

Google’s John Mueller confirmed this during a Google Hangout On Air at the end of last month and said: “I think we’ll continue to dial those (Panda/Penguin) down, over time… because over time, we’ve seen that a lot of those technical changes have had downsides in the sense that they take a lot of time for people to recover from, and it’s very technical work. I think as we get more experience with the newer versions of things… then maybe we can dial those back.”

This is good news for webmasters affected by technical algorithms and the technical SEO aspect of marketing. With technical marketing being a large part of almost every marketing campaign undertaken, these changes should mean less work for those hoping to maintain their current rankings – although Google has been keen to point out that technical SEO is still important.

This article will explore why technical SEO is something you shouldn’t do without.

Why is technical SEO important?

The technical aspect of SEO has been around for a long time. However, it’s only recently that Google has made it something you should pay close attention to. Technical SEO is all about ensuring your site functions properly and can be easily indexed by search engines. Things like page speed and maintaining a secure connection are technical SEO issues that Google is prioritizing, although technical SEO has always been an important factor.

Did you know? There are many SEO benefits to making sure your site is technically sound, including:

  •  Higher search rankings – technical errors can lead to lower rankings, which means missing out on potential customers.
  •  More traffic – technical errors can lead to lower search rankings which means missing out on potential customers.
  •  More conversions – technical errors can lead to lower search rankings, missing out on potential customers.
  •  Better customer satisfaction – technical errors can lead to lower search rankings which means missing out on potential customers.
  •  Maintaining a secure site – Google has stated that they will be placing more importance on sites with a secure connection. Technical issues may lead to your site being considered less secure.
  •  Having an additional technical resource – technical SEO is something you shouldn’t do without because you need someone who knows how it all works. However, it’s important to note that technical SEO is something you should never do yourself unless you understand and know how to implement it.

Google announced technical updates (beyond their usual Panda and Penguin updates) in March this year which has had a major impact on some brands and webmasters. It was announced that technical SEO would be focused on moving forward; however, Google didn’t clarify whether technical updates would continue or not after they had been implemented.

What are the benefits of technical SEO?

When technical SEO is included in a web project, it contributes to the high quality of websites.

Technical SEO refers to all technical aspects present in the HTML markup of a website, affecting its ranking – both positively and negatively. The technical optimization thus concerns issues such as accessibility (e.g., if your website is available in different languages, if it is optimized for mobile devices, etc.), reliability (e.g., the capacity of your site to manage technical problems), and speed (e.g., response times).

Many technical issues directly affect SEO balance: these are often invisible technical problems that need constantly updated information depending on the changes of systems, applications, or technical platforms.

Technical SEO ensures the management of technical risks and the quality of technical systems, which is essential to ensure technical support for search engine crawlers and users looking for information on the Internet. If they are too many or serious, these technical problems can prevent search engines from correctly indexing your website or can significantly slow down your website.

Technical SEO is therefore often referred to as technical optimization.

Technical optimization aims to achieve easy technical management, reduce technical risks, and ensure that all technical aspects are optimized for the best results. Technical SEO also provides a better user experience by ensuring that websites can be easily crawled and indexed by search engines while providing optimal response times for visitors.

Finally, technical SEO is an important part of the technical side of digital marketing. Indeed technical problems can result in other online marketing components (e.g., emailing) becoming obsolete because they are not optimized or may use technology that becomes outdated or abandoned by internet users (e.g., technical problems can slow down website traffic or affect how users interact with the site).

To sum up, technical SEO ensures that technical aspects are optimized to satisfy both search engines and users.

What should I be looking out for when doing this type of work?

  • A technical SEO audit is an investigation of your website’s technical issues.
  • It’s about finding technical problems impeding the indexing and ranking processes.

What should I be looking out for when doing this type of work?

Here are the technical problems technical SEO audits usually uncover:

  • URLs that are not optimized or are duplicate content.
  • Technical issues such as the Robots.txt file, canonical tags, etc.
  • Technical issues such as duplicated content on your site and third-party sites.

It would be best if you also looked out for:

Technical problems can be easily fixed by removing or amending code and content. These technical SEO opportunities will often provide a greater investment return than technical issues requiring a more technical solution.

How can I learn more about it and get started today?

It’s the technical side of things that most people struggle with regarding technical SEO.

In technical terms, technical SEO is working through all those technical issues which Googlebot isn’t picking up.

If a website has a broken sitemap or incorrect redirects, technical SEO will help sort this out.

Search Engine Optimization FAQs

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is the process of optimizing a website for Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs). This includes improving the website’s architecture, on-page elements like titles and metatags, and backlinking. Technical SEO can be a complex process, but it’s essential for any website that wants to rank high in Google.

Is technical SEO difficult?

No, it’s not difficult. However, it’s important to understand the basics of how search engines work in order to make sure your website is configured in a way that will help it rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). There are many free resources available online that can teach you the basics of technical SEO.

What is technical SEO and on-page SEO?

Technical SEO is the process of optimizing a website’s infrastructure and code in order to improve its search engine visibility. On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual webpages in order to rank higher in search engine results pages.

What is technical optimization SEO?

Technical optimization is a process of improving the visibility and ranking of a website by optimizing its technical aspects. This includes optimizing the website’s structure, code, and content for search engines. Technical optimization is an important part of SEO and can help improve a website’s ranking in search results.

What is the difference between on page SEO and technical SEO?

On page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages in order to rank higher and earn more traffic in search engine results pages. Technical SEO is the practice of optimizing a website’s architecture, internal linking, and technical factors in order to improve search engine crawlability and indexation.

How many types of SEO are there?

There are two main types of SEO: on-page SEO and off-page SEO. On-page SEO is the process of optimizing your website’s content and structure to make it as search engine-friendly as possible. Off-page SEO is the process of improving your website’s ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs) through tactics like link building and social media marketing.

WHAT IS SEO?

Search engine optimization is more commonly known as its acronym SEO. Optimization is the basis of all SEO practices. Once your brand’s presence (website, content and social media platforms) is optimized across the internet, you increase its online visibility. Your website will find its way to the first page of the search engine results pages (SERPs). Your online customers will find your business much quicker too.

HOW DOES SEO WORK?

SEO is the practice of making changes to your online presence, particularly your website, making it more attractive to search engines like Google and Bing. Search engines crawl (or scan) your website to understand what it is about. The best SEO practices make sure it is easy for search engines to understand your website. SEO increases the quantity of organic website traffic and the quality of your site visitors at no additional cost. It doesn’t include any paid media or placement and it excludes direct traffic. With a robust SEO strategy implemented on your website, Google will identify it as an authority site and point users in your site’s direction.

DO I NEED DIFFERENT SEO STRATEGIES FOR DIFFERENT SEARCH ENGINES?

There are subtle differences between the various search engines. However, you can usually focus on Google in your SEO strategy, since most of your target market will make use of this leading search engine. Also, the majority of organic traffic is from Google.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO IMPLEMENT AN SEO CAMPAIGN?

It’s advisable to employ an experienced SEO agency or expert and this cost should be included in your marketing budget. The amount you should expect to pay is aligned to the scope of work needed to ensure success. A digital agency or SEO expert will charge after considering the project scope and once you have presented your predetermined expectations. The average hourly rate of employing an agency or SEO expert is approximately $150 per hour.

CAN I DO SEO MYSELF?

Yes, you can – it takes a bit of know-how and learning by trial and error, but it’s possible to implement a basic SEO strategy across your website. However, SEO is time-consuming and to do it properly you need to consider both technical SEO and on-page SEO. What’s more, you will need to keep up-to-date with the algorithms’ changes to the various search engines.

WHAT AFFECTS YOUR SEO RANKING?

There are three factors that directly impact your SEO ranking, even if you’ve only implemented a very basic search strategy on your site. The factors to be aware of are:
Page Load Time — If your website loads too slowly your visitors will bounce and likely go to a competitor’s website. Google (and all search engines) will rank your website lower because of a slow page load time. This is something to pay close attention as we draw closer to the major update confirmed by Google. The Core Web Vitals update in March 2021 will focus on three aspects that directly — and dramatically — impact user experience on your site. Page load time features in this update and is paramount to securing your ranking or reaching the top of the SERPs.
Keyword Selection — Your keywords must be carefully chosen so your website and pages are listed under the correct search terms your ideal customer is looking for.
Content Creation — If you create quality content on your website your audience will find your site quickly, easily and will stay on your site to learn more. This increases dwell time which boosts rankings on search engines.
